Petroleo Brasileiro SA, known as Petrobras, is owned primarily by the Brazilian government and is Brazil’s largest energy company. It refines, produces and distributes oil and oil-based products both nationally and internationally. The firm divides company activities into a number of business sectors, including exploration and production; downstream; gas and energy; and international. Petrobras is one of the largest companies in the global downstream sector, which includes refining, transportation and marketing. The firm’s downstream business includes 15 oil refineries and more than 18,000 miles of pipeline. Petrobras supplies almost the entire demand for petroleum byproducts in Brazil, which are distributed through more than 8,000 service stations by subsidiary Petrobras Distribudora. The exploration and production unit of Petrobras researches, identifies, develops, produces and incorporates oil and natural gas reserves in Brazil. The gas and energy segment markets domestic and imported natural gas and implements project with the private sector to guarantee fuel throughout Brazil. This division also develops and invests in alternative energy sources, such as wind, solar and biofuel energy. Internationally, Petrobras operates in 26 countries outside of Brazil, maintaining international operations including exploration and petroleum procurement. Subsidiary Petrobras Transporte S.A. is responsible for the transportation and storage of the firm’s oil and gas. The firm sells fuels and lubricants for the auto, aviation, marine, railroad, and other industries. In 2008, Petrobas became the leading shareholder in the Nansei Sekiyu Kabushiki Kaisha Refinery and signed an equity partnership with Peroleo de Venezuela for a refinery in Brazil. Petrobras has a research staff of more than 1,800 people and a massive exploration budget. It will invest $174.5 billion from 2009 through 2013 in improvements and new fields, concentrating on finds in deep offshore waters, including the new Tupi field, which may contain as many as 8 billion barrels of oil.
