Petroleo Brasileiro SA, known as Petrobras, is owned primarily by the Brazilian government and is one of the country’s largest energy companies. It refines, produces and distributes oil and oil-based products both nationally and internationally. The firm divides company activities into five business sectors: exploration and production; supply; distribution; gas and energy; and international. Petrobas’ exploration and production unit researches, identifies, develops, produces and incorporates oil and natural gas reserves in Brazil. It currently produces roughly 2.4 million barrels of oil per day equivalent. The company’s supply business includes 11 oil refineries and roughly 8,595 miles of pipeline that operate approximately 98.4% of Brazil’s total refining capacity. Petrobras distributes approximately 34.9% of the demand for petroleum byproducts in Brazil through nearly 6,800 service stations. The gas and energy segment markets domestic and imported natural gas and implements project with the private sector to guarantee fuel throughout Brazil. This division also develops/invests in alternative energy sources, including wind, solar and biofuel energy. Internationally, Petrobras operates in 23 countries, maintaining international operations including exploration and petroleum procurement. Subsidiary Petrobras Transporte S.A. is responsible for the transportation and storage of the firm’s oil and gas. The firm sells fuels and lubricants for the auto, aviation, marine, railroad, and other industries. Petrobras has a research staff of more than 1,800 people and a massive exploration budget. It will invest $174.5 billion from 2009 through 2013 in improvements and new fields, concentrating on finds in deep offshore waters, including the new Tupi field, which may contain as many as 8 billion barrels of oil. In April 2009, the company acquired the remaining 60% interest in now wholly-owned subsidiary Petrobras de Valores Internacional de Espana S.L.; and subsidiaries Petrobras Participaciones, S.L. and Petrobras Venezuela Investments & Services B.V. acquired the Chilean distribution/logistics operations of ExxonMobil. In November 2009, Petrobas acquired Chevron Chile S.A.C.
