Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC is an international market maker, executing financial transactions for broker-dealers, banks and financial institutions for stocks, bonds and other assets. Madoff maintains more than $700 million in capital, ranking it among the top U.S. securities firms. The firm utilizes advanced, proprietary information processing systems to respond to client’s buy and sell orders with scans of prevailing prices in all markets. The system then executes the orders at their best market prices in a transaction that spans only a few seconds. Orders may be made electronically or by telephone. Besides using computers for taking trading orders, Madoff maintains automated clearing and settlement systems that interface with the Depository Trust Company, the Options Clearing Corporation and the National Securities Clearing Corporation, as well as with the systems of most major global custodians and clearing and settlement firms. These systems allow the firm to offer customers customized, electronically delivered transaction reports. The company has a London affiliate, Madoff Securities International Limited, which provides a profitable link to the global securities marketplace. With the opening of this London office in 1983, the company became one of the first U.S. members of the London Stock Exchange. In addition to the London office and its main office, Madoff maintains a special, disaster recovery facility, located near LaGuardia Airport, which is capable of handling all the firm’s trading, clearing and settlement activities in the case of an emergency closing the head office. The disaster recovery office is continually staffed with working employees that rotate between it and the main office. It is on a different power grid than the main office, it uses a separate telephone central office and has its own back up generator. Unfortunately, founder Bernard Madoff was accused, in late 2008, of allegedly running one of the largest financial scams in history, with total losses to investors that may run as high as $50 billion.
